Homologous recombination

Homologous recombination is genetic exchange between homologous DNA or RNA sequences.

“Recombination” refers to the exchange of genetic information. Homologous recombination is the exchange of genetic information between homologous DNA or RNA sequences.

Homologous recombination takes place in crossing over (Fig), in which homologous regions of chromosomes are exchanged. Homologous recombination is also important in some types of DNA repair.

Crossing over

Gene conversion is a type of homologous recombination in which a donor sequence converts a homologous acceptor sequence.

Definitions in the literature

  • Exchange of genetic information between homologous DNA molecules [1].
