Spectrometry

Spectrometry is a measurement technique to analyze the interaction between matter and electromagnetic radiation.

The terms "spectrometry" and "spectroscopy" are often used interchangeably, which can lead to confusion. However, spectroscopy usually refers to the direct analysis of electromagnetic waves, whereas spectrometry does not. For instance, mass spectrometry measures the mass of target molecules activated by electromagnetic waves, making it inaccurate to refer to this technique as "mass spectroscopy".

  • The study of physical systems by the electromagnetic radiation with which they interact or that they produce. Spectrometry is the measurement of such radiations as a means of obtaining information about the systems and their components. In certain types of optical spectroscopy, the radiation originates from an external source and is modified by the system, whereas in other types, the radiation originates within the system itself [2].
