Optical density (OD)

Optical density (OD) is a measure of transmittance calculated by the following equation:

ODλ = –Log10[Tλ/Iλ]

where

  • ODλ = Optical density at the wavelength λ
  • Tλ = Intensity of transmittance at the wavelength λ
  • Iλ = Intentisy of incident light at the wavelength λ

Because Iλ is always higher than Tλ, Log10[Tλ/Iλ] is always negative. Thus, OD defined as –Log10[Tλ/Iλ] is always positive.



Definitions in the literature
