Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a technology to visualize the spatial distribution of the spins of magnetic nuclei as images. Signals from water proton is used for most MRI applications.

Definitions in the literature

  • The first important reports on MRI were those of Lauterbur (1973) and Mansfield and Grannell (1973), in which they reconstructed the spatial distribution of the spins of magnetic nuclei as images. In principle, signals from any magnetic nuclei can be presented in the form of an image. However, due to its abundance in biological systems, the signal of the water proton is used for most MRI applications [1].
