Intron

Intron is the nucleotide sequence removed from RNA after post-transcriptional processing.

Introns are present in eukaryotes, but not in prokaryotes. In genes and pre-mRNAs introns are located between exons.

Definitions in the literature

  • Noncoding sequence between coding regions in a eukaryotic gene; removed from the RNA after transcription [1].
  • Nucleotide sequence that intervenes between exons and is removed during post-transcriptional modification [2].
  • ... all of the completely sequenced eukaryotes harbor introns in the genomic structure, whereas no prokaryotes identified so far carry introns [3].
