A glioma is a type of tumor originating from the glial cells of the brain or spine. MRI images were cited from [2].
Gliomas are further classified into following types by 2007 WHO classification. Cited from Vigneswaran et al. 2015 [1].
- Astrocytoma: Grade I. Found diffusely infiltrating into surrounding neural tissue; increased hypercellularity, no mitosis. Median survival 6-8 years.
- Oligodendroglioma: Grade II. Occur in the white matter and cortex of the cerebral hemispheres, low mitotic activity, no necrosis. Median survival 12 years.
- Anaplastic-astrocytoma/oligodendroglioma: Grade III. Highly infiltrating tumors with increased mitotic activity; no necrosis or vascular proliferation. Median survival 3 years.
- Glioblastoma: Grade IV. Infiltrating glial neoplasm with necrosis and micro-vascular proliferation; high rate of mitosis. Median survival 1-2 years.
