DNA barcoding

DNA barcoding is a method to identify a species using a short DNA sequence of the organism.

Although any genes can be used for DNA barcoding, in a narrow definition, DNA barcoding indicates species determination of animals based on their 5' region sequence of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) gene, originally proposed by Hebert et al. [2].

Definitions in the literature

  • DNA barcoding is defined as a taxonomic method that uses a short genetic marker in an organism’s DNA to identify its affiliation to a particular species [1].
