Anammox

Anammox is the abbreviation for "anaerobic ammonium oxidation".

Anammox is a process in the biological nitrogen cycle, in which N2 is directly produced from NO2- and NH4+. This is a microbial process, and anammox-performing bacteria have only been found in the phylum Planctomycetota.

Anammox is one of the autotrophic denitrification processes.

Definitions in the literature

  • Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) is an enzymatic reaction performed by anaerobic ammonium oxidizing bacteria (AnAOB) that use ammonium (NH4+) as an electron donor and nitrite (NO2-) as an electron acceptor to generate dinitrogen gas [1]
