Aging

Aging is the time-independent functional and structural changes in organisms that result in the decline of body functions.

In general, aging is caused by the accumulation of molecular-level damages and begins after the reproductive maturation.

Definitions in the literature

  • the gradual accumulation of damage to essential biological molecules, particularly DNA in both the nucleus and mitochondria, resulting in defects in cell functioning, declining health, and ultimately death [1].
  • As a result of this survey, we may define aging as the time-independent series of cumulative, progressive, intrinsic, and deleterious functional and structural changes that usually begin to manifest themselves at reproductive maturity and eventually culminate in death [2].
